First Fruit

First Fruit, originally uploaded by Phil Mercer.

I've been away for the last week. The first tomato was ready for plucking and I have no idea what state the allotment is in.

That I will discover tonight!!!

Ripening up

Ripening up, originally uploaded by Phil Mercer.

I'm on a roll with these updates!

The tomatoes (which are on my balcony) are ticking along nicely. This is the first one to start to ripen though! Very exciting!

Tomatoes grow

I chopped some leaves away last night for a stir fry, but they are still looking good.

Chard

The children of Dashwood Community Primary school challenged me to grow my own... And gave me these to keep alive! So far so good!

Still alive!

Allotment stage 1 complete

Runner Beans

Earlier I spotted that the Runner beans I've been growing in little pots at home were ready to move. I had nearly finished their plot at the allotment, so with a bit of effort it all came together nicely this morning.

Allotment stage 1 complete, originally uploaded by Phil Mercer.

The first part of the project to get my allotment in to some kind of order is finished. The beans, pepper and tomatoes all went in today.

Strawberries are also there.

Strawberries

I'm not really expecting much of a crop (if any) but wanted to at least get the thing ticking over. The next stage is to clear some more of the over grown area and get it rotarvated and then covered in manure!

First shoots

First shoots, originally uploaded by Phil Mercer.

Since the plot at the allotment still needs some work before it will be ready to put the Runner Beans in. I've given myself a head start and planted seven of them in to pots at home. After a week here are the first signs of life!

Broken metal

I've just got back from the allotment having put in another couple rows of Lettuce. The ground is pretty hard, in fact so hard I snapped a prong off my new fork!

It was a bargain, and now I know why!

Growing my own!

It turns out patience pays off in the end. About a year ago I put in a request for an allotment! I'd completely forgotten about it.

Out of the blue last week up popped an email from Ursel with news of a plot that had become available.

This is it:

Somewhere in there is what's left of an allotment. There is a lot of digging and clearing to do, but some bits have been covered so might be okay.

Now all I need is an expert!

Tom-two-ten

I'm going to try and grow tomatoes. I've only got window boxes, so this is likely to fail. Fingers crossed:

Plus some lettuce type things (I forget what they actually are!)
