Equality Bell

A friend of mine has come up wig an interesting idea. To give to the people of the United States an 'Equality Bell'. Foundered by the same people in east London that created Big Ben and The Liberty Bell.
It would be rung evertime the US made a step closer to equality.

He has approached a selection of celebrities to act as co-funders, all of whome would have a signature on the bell. This would make it simpler to complete and would give a publicity jump start.

When chatting to my friend last night I posed the question: Wouldn't it be better if the bell were to come from the people?

It occurs to me that a certain legitimacy would be provided if this was actually presented by some normal folk that had been able to use the equality laws we have here to show that things are possible and the world doesn't end when they are put in place.

Have the celebrities pay for and endorse it. But this really needs to be backed by a respected organisation along the lines of Stonewall.

I'm not actually sure we are best placed to be a guiding light for the Americans as we still have a few steps to make ourselves (having watched our own equality legislation get watered down last week!)

May be we should create two bells - and keep one to ring for our own steps along the way to true equality.
