Pop

I'm just been to see my mate Ruth. She has the dubious title of 'Oldest Friend' (we've known each other since school).

As a contemporary dancer she has been dedicated to a pretty physical life. It's not easy throwing yourself around (even if very gracefully). One thing that didn't come up in convesation very often over the years was the prospect of the patter of little feet, even after she married Richard a few years back.

I suppose it's almost impossible to keep up dancing once you've had the challenge of pregnancy. Unless you have staff to take on the child care!

Any way, thats all history now. She has just given birth to a little baby girl (Chloe). Something which I wondered might never happen.

It's a wonderful thing holding a little baby. All the details of an adult on such a small scale. Chloe ran through the entire spectrum of facial expressions in the space of just a few minutes. Its at times like that being gay is difficult. Knowing the only way I could have a little baby of my own would involve jumping through a vast number of difficult, near impossible, expensive (emotionally and financialy) hoops. Not that it's easy for straight couples. My sister needed several courses of IVF before finally getting pregnant with the twins and Ruth had a pretty aweful labour!

I suppose I should be thankful really. I won't have to deal with the financial burdon, or the sleepless nights, but hopefully will get to play the part of the doting uncle.

I'll also just have to get used to the fact that here ends my part of the Mercer genetic line. That might not be a bad thing... No one deserves this nose!
