The top shelf...

For a while now I've been playing a little game with the people at Martins who run the newsagents near work.

They insist on putting the gay press up on the top shelf with all the hermetically sealed pornography. In some way I can understand the thinking behind this. For small minded people who have a prejudice approach to what they think gay people are all about, much less read it's obvious that the gentle public wouldn't want to accidentally pick up a magazine full of disgusting concepts. They are up there on the top shelf with all the rest of that filth.

I to have a problem with a lot of the gay press. I have, for a long time, wanted to be able to leave a copy of the Gay Times or Pink Paper around the house and to be happy with the thought of either my parents, or one of my neighbours children picking it up and having a flick through. In reality I would be pretty horrified at the thought. There is simply too much sex in them and it gives the idea that this is all gay people are interested in.

But, not all gay magazines are focused on sex and even the ones that do are no worse than Nuts, Men's Health or The Sun!

So why aren't those magazine kept alongside the rest? Discuss. For the time being, I'm going to keep moving the gay mags in my Martins down from the top shelf to the Lifestyle section.

Of course, what I should do is corner the manager and ask him to make that move permanent. Maybe next time!
