Its the first full week of 2008 and I've got a day off to chill out and start to sort things out for the New Year, but I can't help but look back at the last week or so and some of the bizarre things that have happened.
I think the saddest news was of the death of one of my radio heroes Kevin Greening. He was a DJ on
GLR and then Virgin Radio where I first heard his name. It wasn't until he took on the weekend breakfast show on BBC Radio 1 that he really caught my imagination.
He had a fantastic selection of sketches and features that always made me laugh. It was always very intelligent humour, featuring Splicers Disease, Raymond Sinclair and even the Mike Flowers Pops.
I suppose I also identified with his as he was gay. At the time I was only just coming to terms with my sexuality, so it helped to know that others were making it to the top flight... in an understated way, without having to go to extremes of
campness etc
His death at 44 is really sad, as he probably had many years ahead of him. However, if all the gossip columns are even near the truth, he was playing a risky game in his personal life. But if you are going to go, why not go with a bang!
I will miss you Kevin Greening.
