The long goodbye.

I had one of those days yesterday. It was lovely day - a crisp and sunny winters day - yet very sad at the same time.

Last year my Grandmother died. She was 80 and had lived a good life by anyones standards. Its taken nearly a year to get to the point where the Family is able (and ready) to sell her house.

Yesterday was diffiult becuase we began the process of splitting up the bits and bobs she owned amongst the family. Possessions are only things, but its the memories that come with them that mean so much. The chair my great grandfather sat on, my Grandfathers map collection, Grandmas hair dressing set and even the model railway packed up in the attic.

For me the house is riddled with some of the best (and occasionally the tougher) times. The attic was always the hide out for the children... with the train set and little hidden nooks and crannies. The big ancient oak tree in the back garden. It occured to me that losing Gran wasn't necessarily the onyl thing I would miss. The house has been as important in the family as any one member of it.

The question is, how can you capture those memories. I've been doing my best to take photos of the house, but they can only ever act as a reminder. I just hope that we find a new house to contain some good times for the next however long.

I've put some of the pictures on to my flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/philmercer
